Combine these concerns with the stress of modern life and its little wonder so many are deciding to live off the grid. These environment issues regarding climate change, sustainable energy, carbon footprints have become part of our daily vocabulary. In America, it’s estimated that 180,000 people live off the grid, most of whom are doing so for lifestyle reasons (abandoning the rat race) and a concern for environment. Large swaths of Africa, parts of Asia and Latin America don’t even have a grid to live off of. Much of the undeveloped word lives on less than a dollar a day in countries where things we take for granted, like electricity, running water and the internet, simply don’t exist. However, globally, its estimated that over 1.7 million people live off the grid and not because they want to. In the U.S., the number of folks who lack the means to stay connected to the grid is thankfully small. It may be hard to believe that in our affluent country there are people who live off the grid because they can’t afford the expense of living in the modern, plugged in world. However, there are who do it out of financial necessity. Most people who live off the grid do so as a lifestyle choice. There are a lot of different reasons people decide why off grid living is for them, but three tend to be the most often cited financial, environmental or a lifestyle choice which revolves around simplicity. ![]() No matter to what degree a person wants to be disconnected to the grid or the number of amenities they require, there are countless of options for every taste. There are also many different styles of off grid housing, ranging from bare-bones simple to off the charts luxurious. Many people generate heat through propane and remain connected to the internet. To achieve this, you may source your own energy though wind turbines or solar panels. ![]() In other words, you have to step back a couple of hundred years and take up a lifestyle that folks in the 1700’s would recognize.įor most people, however, living off the grid is living a sustainable life, one that is ecologically friendly and leaves a small carbon footprint. To some, the most extreme, living off the grid means one must forgo all modern conveniences, technology and food sources. Living off the grid is a relative term meaning different things to different people.
